Mississauga Synchro Swimmers Successful at Tier Championships

Mississauga – With flawless synchronization and strong individual performances, Mississauga Synchronized Swimming Association swimmers won multiple team and individual medals at the 2006 Ontario Tier Championships held last weekend in London.

The club’s Tier 4 team, coached by MSSA head coach Debbie Stanton, continued to climb the podium winning a Silver Medal at the Championships. Earlier this season, the team had won Gold at the Central Regionals and Silver at the Ontario Winter Games. Team member Rebecca Gordon won the Bronze Medal in individual figures with teammates Colleen Gammie placing 5th and Trisha Petrosoniak placing 10th out of 69 swimmers. Other team members include Nicole Amato, Kelly Bowman, Melissa Egan and Cheryl Jackson.

With their best routine swim of the year and strong figures from the entire team, the Tier 3 team coached by Elaine Kanasewich won the Bronze Medal at the Championships. They had won Gold at the Central Regionals. In individual figures, Michelle Cannon won the Bronze Medal for the Tier 3 – 13 and Over figure competition with Kayley Pezzack coming a close 4th. Meanwhile team member Stephanie D’Amato placed 9th in the Tier 4 13 and Under figure competition. The team also includes Katrina Tenbroek, Alison Kinghorn. Alexa Miller, Emily Nelson, and Fareen Ahmed.

MSSA swimmer Jessie Cait placed 10th in the Tier 3 – 13 and over figure competition helping the Club’s second Tier 3 team advance to the finals on Sunday. In the finals, the team, coached by Alanna Harman, placed 9th. There were 19 Ontario Tier 3 teams in the competition. They had won the Bronze Medal at the Central Regionals. Other teammates include Rebecca Damiani, Amanda Cannon, Jennifer Pham, Melissa McCoy, Sarah Toye, and Jennifer Snowdon.

Coach Sophie Tanguay’s Tier 2 team also had a strong swim winning 5th place out of 25 teams. Naomi Johnson won the 6th place ribbon for the Tier 2 – 13 and Over individual figure competition out of 85 swimmers while team member Keely Crall placed 9th in the Tier 2 – 12 and Under competition of 114 swimmers The team was coming off a Silver Medal win at the Central Regionals. The team also includes Julie Taylor, Katie Allen, Mattia Fonzo, Chelsea Evershed, Victoria Scott, and Rubee Holland.

Coach Elisha Pettersen’s Tier 2 team swam a very synchronized “superhero” themed routine. Team members include Leah Jackson Georgina Hill, Lauren Ray, Jasmine Leiva, Jessica Reinprecht, Sarah Davidson, Keara Clarke and Jessica Robillard.

Coach Sita Klefeldt’s Tier 2 team, comprised of mostly new swimmers to the competitive stream, had fun swimming to “Bad to the Bone”. Team members are Julia Cupido, Erin Dawson, Madison Nangle, Dominique Spanovic and Meredith Webb.

MSSA’s “unique athletes”, or athletes with disabilities, were also very successful at this competition. Amanda Fairbairn placed 2nd in routine winning the Silver Solo medal. She also won the Gold in Level 1 figures with Cheryl Longley winning the Bronze Medal.

MSSA has been in operation for 36 years and is currently one of the four largest synchronized swimming clubs in the province with over 100 members ranging in age from 7 to 50+. MSSA offers programs to suit a broad range of participants including a very successful competitive program, two separate recreational programs, a Masters program and a Unique Athletes program designed to accommodate swimmers with disabilities.

MSSA is holding its annual Swim Show at Huron Park Pool at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday June 11. The public is invited to come watch as all the MSSA swimmers show off their great routines.
