Mississauga Synchro Girls Dominate
Central/Northern Ontario Regional Competition

Mississauga - Swimmers from the Mississauga Synchronized Swimming Association (MSSA) won multiple individual and team medals at last weekend’s Central/Northern Ontario Regional Synchronized Swimming meet held at Rosedale Height’s Pool in Toronto.

Two MSSA teams won Gold medal championships. Teams also won a Silver and a Bronze and 11 swimmers won individual medals for figures.

MSSA’s Tier 4 team, fresh off their Silver medal win at the Ontario Winter Games in March, won the Gold medal at the Regionals. The girls also placed well in the individual figures 14 & over category, with team member Rebecca Gordon winning the Silver medal, Melissa Egan the Bronze medal, Trisha Petrosoniak 4th, Cheryl Jackson 9th, Colleen Gammie 11th and Kelly Bowman 12th. Youngest swimmer Nicole Amato placed 5th in the 13 & under category.

MSSA’s Tier 3 team, coached by Elaine Kanasewich, won the Gold medal for the team championship with their strong routine swim to a Smashing Pumpkins/The Clash medley. Team members also captured seven of the top 11 spots in the compulsory individual figures in the 13 & over age group. Kayley Pezzack won Gold, Katrina Tenbroek won Silver, Michelle Cannon won Bronze, with Alison Kinghorn placing 4th, Alexa Miller 7th, Emily Nelson 9th and Fareen Ahmed 11th. Youngest team member Stephanie D’Amato placed 4th in the 13 & under age group.

MSSA’s second Tier 3 team coached Alanna Harman’s also had an excellent showing swimming to a Britney Spears medley, winning the Bronze medal. The team placed well in individual compulsory figures, with Rebecca Damiani capturing Gold, and Amanda Cannon Silver in the 12 & under age group. In the 13 & over age group Jessie Cait placed 5th, and Jennifer Pham 6th. Other members of the Bronze medal winning team include Melissa McCoy, Sarah Toye, and Jennifer Snowdon.

Coach Sophie Tanguay’s Tier 2 team won the Silver medal with an energetic swim to a funky 1970’s disco inspired routine. The swimmers also led the pack in the compulsory figures in the 12 & under age group with Julie Taylor winning Gold, Keely Crall Silver, and Mattia Fonzo 6th. In the 13 & over age group, Naomi Johnson won Silver, and Chelsea Evershed placed 6th. Other team members include Katie Allen, Victoria Scott, and Rubee Holland.

Coach Elisha Pettersen’s Tier 2 team swam a very synchronized “superhero” themed routine and placed 3rd in routine, and 4th in championship for the Central division. In individual compulsory Tier 1 figures, Leah Jackson won the Bronze medal. Other members of the team include Georgina Hill, Lauren Ray, Jasmine Leiva, Jessica Reinprecht, Sarah Davidson, Keara Clarke and Jessica Robillard.

Coach Sita Klefeldt’s Tier 2 team, comprised of mostly new swimmers to the competitive stream, placed 6th in routine and 7th overall in the Central division swimming to “Bad to the Bone”. Team members are Julia Cupido, Erin Dawson, Madison Nangle, Dominique Spanovic and Meredith Webb.

MSSA’s “unique athletes”, or athletes with disabilities, were also very successful at this competition. Amanda Fairbairn placed 2nd in routine winning the Silver championship medal. Cheryl Longley placed 4th in routine, and 5th overall.

The next quest for MSSA swimmers is the 2006 Ontario-Quebec Cup for tiers 3 & 4 on April 29th and 30th at Centennial Pool in Burlington.
