In 2009, Synchro Canada changed the structure of the sport of synchronized swimming from a skill based “Tier System”,
back to an age based system. Swimmer’s age is used at both the Provincial and National level to determine their placement for competition.
A swimmer’s age is determined as of December 31, 2010.
We offer programs for Provincial Stream Competitive and National Stream Competitive athletes.
In order to move to the Competitive Stream, swimmers must have passed Star 3.
To enter the National Stream of competition, swimmers must have passed Super Star 3.
All swimmers may “challenge” at the Star level required for that level of competition.
Swimmers compete and are ranked against other swimmers at local, provincial or national meets.
The competitive year runs from September to June and swimmers must be at the appropriate Star level by December 15 to be properly registered as a competitive swimmer.
Competitive – Provincial Stream
This is a competitive synchronized swimming program for girls with or without synchro experience who can pass Star 3 by December 15.
12 & under
Swimmers practice 2 times weekly for approximately 5 hours in total. Their training includes endurance and stroke improvement at each practice in addition to technical synchronized swimming skills. Girls participate in both individual compulsory technical figures and a choreographed routine at competitions. The team may include swimmers who are older than 12 years of age, as long as the average of the team is 12 & under. All swimmers compete compulsory figures for their appropriate age, even if they are on a team of blended ages.
The goals of the program are to provide increased hours above the Novice (Recreational) level to further develop skills. Improvement is clearly visible in the twice-weekly program. These teams also have the challenge of competitions as girls can participate at Regional and Provincial meets. The concept of teamwork and strong basic skills is emphasized throughout the season.
13-15
Is generally a program for girls with previous synchro experience. Swimmers practice 3 times weekly for approximately 7.5 hours in total. Their training includes endurance and stroke improvement at each practice in addition to technical synchronized swimming skills. Girls participate in both individual compulsory technical figures and a choreographed routine at competitions. The team may include swimmers who are older than 15 years of age or younger than 13, as long as the average of the team is 13-15 years. All swimmers compete compulsory figures for their appropriate age, even if they are on a team of blended ages.
The goals of the program are to provide a competitive component for the swimmer who wishes a challenge and quicker rate of skill development than the Recreation level provides. Girls develop their skills very quickly in this program. Swimmers participate at Regional and Provincial meets. The concepts of teamwork and disciplined skill development are stressed in a positive and encouraging environment.
16-20
Is generally a program for girls who have progressed from the 13-15 provincial competitive stream. Swimmers practice 3 times weekly for approximately 9 hours in total. Their training includes endurance and stroke improvement at each practice in addition to technical synchronized swimming skills. Girls participate in both individual compulsory technical figures and a choreographed routine at competitions. The team may include swimmers who are younger than 16, as long as the average of the team is 16 years. All swimmers compete compulsory figures for their appropriate age, even if they are on a team of blended ages.
Competitive – National Stream
This is a competitive synchronized swimming program for girls with previous synchro experience who can pass Super Star 3 by December 15.
Competitive – National Stream
Tier 6 (13-15)

Their training includes endurance and stroke improvement at each practice in addition to technical synchronized swimming skills. Girls participate in both individual compulsory technical figures and a choreographed routine at competitions. Teams may have 4-8 members, unlike Provincial Stream which can swim up to 10 members.
Swimmers are 16 years of age as of December 31 of competitive season. Swimmers may be younger than 16 years of age. Example: A team may be comprised of seven 15 year olds, if their 8th member is 16 years old; they compete in the OPEN category.
The goals of this program are to provide further technical skill development, athletic conditioning and a positive environment to work as a team. The senior level swimmer is further honing their skills and advancing within the Tier to often very competitive levels at regional, provincial competitions and nationals. The concepts of teamwork and disciplined skill development are stressed in a positive and encouraging environment.
